The fire department began in 1955 as the Sanfordtown and Community Volunteer Fire Department and the first station was located on Horsebranch Road. A second station was opened on Dudley Road in 1964 at the present Edgewood Fire Department location. The department changed their name to Southern Hills in 1961 to better reflect the territory that was being served.
