The fire district was organized in 1979 and protects the city of Independence and surrounding areas. Located in the heart of Kenton Country, Independence is the county seat The IFD operates out of 3 stations and protects over 22,000 citizens.

News/Updates:
08/23 - A new E-One quint was placed into service with Truck 460, and it will be housed at Station 1. With the new arrival the 2022 E-One assigned to Engine 451 will be relocated to Station 3 and will run as Engine 453.
06/22 - Independence placed into service a new E-One pumper truck with Engine 451. The 2007 Sutphen previosuly assigned to Engine 451 is now a reserve engine.
11/19 - Independence received a new Ford / Horton ambulance for Medic 465. The 2006 Ford / Horton ambulance has been retired.
10/19 - Independence placed into service a new E-One pumper truck with Engine 452. The 1996 Sutphen previously assigned to Engine 452 has been sold to the Ryland Heights Fire Dept.
11/18 - Independence purchased a 1990 Sutphen pumper truck for reserve Engine 453. The 1987 Sutphen has been retired.
07/16 - Indpendence placed into service two new Ford / Horton ambulances with Medic 463 and Medic 464. The 2006 Ford / Horton is now Medic 465 and the 2005 Ford / Horton has been retired.
02/08 - The new Station 2 opened in January, 2008.
10/07 - The IFD placed into service a new 2007 Sutphen as E451. The 1996 Sutphen assigned to E451 was moved to Station 3 as E453.
