The fire department was founded in 1943 and the rescue squad was established in 1960. The department changed to a fire protection district in 1980. In 2000, the department instituted 24 hour staffing and began ALS coverage in 2003. Located centrally in Boone County, Burlington has seen a great deal of growth in the last several years and the department has continued to grow and change with it.
